UPND , PF cadres trade punches in Monze
Monze, January 15th, 2015, ZANIS —- Quick action by Monze police today prevented a potential physical confrontation between suspected United Party for National Development (UPND) and Patriotic Front (PF) cadres.
The PF cadres who were clad in their party regalia and chanting the party slogan were almost attacked by suspected UPND cadres in Monza’s Business centre forcing many businesses to close and people to scamper for safety.
Police had to fire teargas and several warning shots to disperse some suspected UPND cadres who were mobilizing in an alleged attempt to attack the PF cadres.
A ZANIS crew that rushed to the scene found police escorting the PF cadres out of town.
PF District Chairman Mr. Mackenzie Lunge who also witnessed the incident said suspected UPND cadres allegedly mobilized themselves after word went round that the PF cadres were passing through the town en route to Livingstone.
But Mr. Lungu said the action by police prevented an attack by UPND cadres and praised the police for exhibiting professionalism.
“ Some of our members were passing through town and some suspected UPND cadres starting throwing stones at them and had it not been for quick action by police, we could have seen bloodshed but luckily there were no injuries,” said Mr. Lungu
