Acting President Guy Scott has assured miners at Lumwana Mine in North-western Province that their jobs are safe.

Dr. Scott told the miners that government is working round the clock that they keep their jobs.

He said this when he visited the copper mine today in the company of Local Government Minister Emmanuel Chenda, Sports Minister Chishimba Kambwili, Patriotic Front Secretary General Davies Chama and North-western Province Permanent Secretary Amos Malupenga.

Dr. Scott urged workers to remain calm and peaceful as government engages Lumwana to find best solution to resolve impasse with the mine owners who have threatened to lay off workers.

And Barrick Gold Director of Operations for Africa and Middle East Brian Greenbec told Journalists that Lumwana Mine will be suspending operations until an amicable solution is found.

He said his company had followed the right procedures and stands ready to negotiate with government to ensure the mine remains operational and profitable.

Mr. Greenbec denied that his company is blackmailing government by threatening to close the mine following the introduction of new mining taxation regime.

He attributed the decision to suspend mining operations to falling copper prices on international market which has negatively affected the company business.

Over 4500 employees working at Lumwana coper mine risk losing their jobs if the mine is shut.
