Acting President Guy Scott says government remains committed to lighting up North-western province by connecting the region to the national electricity grid.

Dr. Scott says it is pointless to spend millions of Kwacha on infrastructure if the ordinary people cannot benefit from the investment.

The acting President said this today after inspecting the US$163 million funded North-western province national grid extension project in Mwinilunga district.

Dr. Scott said he was impressed with the works being done on the project and directed that schools should be immediately connected so that they can benefit from the project when it is completed.

And Zesco Managing director Cyprian Chitundu explained that the project involves the construction of a 132kv network with a substation to connect the entire North-western province to the national grid.

Mr. Chitundu said once the project is completed, the power utility firm will serve millions of Kwacha it spends on diesel supply to Kabompo, Mufumbwe, Mwinilunga, Zambezi and Chavuma districts.

And speaking at the same occasion, Eltel General Manager Begnst Lundstrom, the Swedish company contracted for the project, said the project will take 24 months to complete.

Mr. Lundstrom further said the completion of the Lumwana substation will be cardinal in completing the Northwestern province extension project.

And Swedish Ambassador Lena Nordstrom disclosed that her government has guaranteed the 163 million dollars needed to finance the extension project.

Ms. Nordstrom said the success of the project will woo Swedish investments in addition to other Swedish firms operating in the country.

Dr. Scott later met Lunda traditional rulers based in Mwinilunga and assured them of government’s resolve to develop the area.

Speaking on behalf of other chiefs, Chief Ntambu wondered why the province has not benefited from the massive infrastructure development taking place across the country despite the region being a major economic distributor.

However, Dr. Scott allayed the notion and pointed to the feeder line about to connect Mwinilunga district to the national power grid

Dr. Scott later held a public meeting where he solicited for votes for the PF presidential candidate Edgar Lungu in the January 20 presidential elections.

He said only the PF can develop the area as demonstrated by the works it has done across the country in the last three years.

And Local Government and Housing Minister Emmanuel Chenda said government will tar over 60 kilometres of township roads in Mwinilunga district.

Dr. Scott is in Northwestern province inspecting government developmental projects.
