Government is working at strengthening measures aimed at reducing malaria fatality case rate in all ages across the country.

Minister of Health Joseph Kasonde, who is in Eastern province to inspect developmental projects, said government was making positive strides in the fight against malaria.

ZANIS reports that Dr. Kasonde, who toured Chipata General Hospital and Chipata Medical Stores Limited, also said government was concerned about the shortage of staff in some health institutions countrywide.

He further stated that there was need to implement an efficient and effective hospital governance system through a motivated workforce.

Dr. Kasonde said the reinstatement of nurses, who were laid off last year for engaging in an illegal strike, is aimed at elevating the provision of high quality health care.

He said his ministry has since engaged trade unions in the formulation of policies that will address a number of management issues to enhance service delivery.

Dr. Kasonde also emphasized optimal availability of essential drugs in all health institutions and cautioned health personnel to ensure that the drugs reach the intended users to promote equity of access to health services.

And Chipata General Hospital Superintendent, Daniel Makawa, said the move by government to earmark his hospital for upgrading to a central hospital was progressive since the institution caters for patients from four districts in the province.

Dr. Makawa said the hospital, which handles second level cases, provides clinical care services in the surgical and medical wards.

He said the hospital has since recorded some improvements in health service delivery although drug supply from Chipata Medical Stores has remained inadequate and inconsistent.

And Chipata Medical Stores Limited Hub Manager Mathews Twaambo said the store supplies drugs to over 103 health centres in four districts in the province.

Mr. Twaambo named the four districts as Lundazi, Chama, Nyimba and Chadiza.
