—–A 41-year-old fisherman in Nchelenge district has died at the hands of Congolese fisheries authorities for illegal fishing activities.

Luapula Province Commissioner of Police, Malcolm Mulenga, in an interview with ZANIS today identified the deceased as Morgan Kalifungwa of Mupolombo Fishing Camp at Chisenga Island whom he said was allegedly beaten and thrown into the Luapula River.

Mr Mulenga said the deceased, who was in the company of other unknown fishers, met his fate on December 26, 2014 around 21: 00 hours after being confronted by Congolese fisheries authorities for violating the annual fish ban.

Commissioner Mulenga said Mr Kalifungwa was allegedly beaten before he was thrown in the Luapula River and left for dead.

He said the body was only retrieved the following day around 08: 00 hours.

The provincial police chief said the officers that rushed to the scene found that the body had already been retrieved and dumped at Kashitu village on the Congolese soil by aggrieved family members.

Mr Mulenga complained that efforts by his officers to investigate the matter are being frustrated by the lack of cooperation by the local people and the family members who are warily violating the fish ban.

However, Mr Mulenga said his officers would still go back and seek an audience with the family members to solicit any information that could lead to Kalifungwa’s assailants.

Meanwhile, the police in Nchelenge district of Luapula Province have launched a manhunt for a man, only identified as Chongo, for murder.

Luapula Province Commissioner of Police, Malcolm Mulenga, confirmed the manhunt to ZANIS in Nchelenge in a telephone interview this morning.

Mr Mulenga said the suspect, who is currently on the run, is alleged to have beaten his 27-year-old wife, Mwenya Precious Kabaso, of Shimalita village in chief Kambwali, on December 19, 2014.

He said the victim reported the case of assault to Nchelenge Police Station on December 20, 2014 and complained of general body pains.

He explained that the victim was later admitted to St Paul’s Mission Hospital on December 22, 2014, where she died the following day  around 11: 00 hours.
