Government says the Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) acted within the law by providing communication support to Acting President Guy Scott when he accompanied Patriotic Front (PF) presidential candidate Edgar Lungu  for the filing of nominations on Saturday.

Chief Government Spokesperson Joseph Katema says ZANIS acted in accordance with its mandate of providing communication support to government officials at no cost.

Dr. Katema, who is also Information and Broadcasting Services Minister, explained that ZANIS was obliged to provide public address system services because Dr. Scott was in the delegation of the presidential candidate Edgar Lungu.

He stated that the electoral regulations of 2011, statutory instrument number 52 of 2011, authorises a person serving as president or vice president to use such facilities in connection with their respective offices.

He said the assertion that ZANIS disadvantaged other candidates by providing the public address system is unfortunate.

Dr. Katema added that ZANIS is expected to provide its facilities to any meeting which the Acting President is expected to attend.

This is contained in a statement released to ZANIS in Lusaka today.

The minister said the impression that has been created that ZANIS favoured the Patriotic Front presidential candidate Mr. Lungu when they provided the public address system during the filing of nominations on Saturday, December 20, 2014 is therefore incorrect.

He regretted the statement issued by the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) which alleged that ZANIS should not have provided the public address system to Mr. Lungu because they did not do so to the other candidates.
