Voter Education Facilitators implored to be non-partisan

Luangwa,
December 16, ZANIS———————– Luangwa District Electoral
Officer, Given Muleya has implored Voter Education Facilitators (VEFs)
in Luangwa District to be non- partisan as they conduct voter education.

Addressing Voter Education Facilitators after a two day training workshop on voter education, Mr. Muleya said voter education was part of civic education which helps citizens
participate in and contribute to the development of a democratic society.

Mr. Muleya said voter education provides voters with knowledge and information
on their rights and responsibilities during an election especially that it raises awareness and understanding of the importance of elections in a democracy.

He urged the voter education facilitators to conduct the exercise in a non-partisan manner so that people make independent informed decisions when they go to vote on 20th January, 2015.

The District Electoral Officer told the Voter Education Facilitators that the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) under the Electoral Act of 2006 is required to provide voter education to ensure that all Zambian citizens eligible to take part in an election have the
knowledge and information needed to make informed choices during an election or elections.

Mr. Muleya urged the VEFs to take the programme seriously and ensure that they deliver their information based on the three principles of being non-partisan, objective and transparency.
