A blueprint of a four-star US$1.6 million lodge is underway in the Liuwa Plain National Park next year.
The project that is earmarked for the Kings’ Pool spot in the park is expected to enhance the number of tourist inflows to the park.
Speaking during a three-day press trip to Liuwa Plain National Park organised by African Parks, manager Rob Reid said negotiations had reached an advanced stage.
“Norman Carr Safaris is in negotiations with the Zambia Wildlife Authority to see how best the lodge is set. It is going to start a little smaller and grow as the needs arise,” he said.
Reid noted that the lodge will give wildlife enthusiasts an opportunity to view the wildlife available from a good angle.
“You would realise that in many parks and sanctuaries, hotels and lodges would be facing the lake or some kind of water pool but here, we only have this vast open plain offering a good angle for viewing the blue wildebeest which is a unique opportunity to most visitors,” he said.
He said at the moment, self-drive visitors to Liuwa stay at one of the four community campsites established in the park, namely Katoyana, Kwale, Lyangu and Sikale and Kayala, which is near Kalabo town.
Each location accommodates up to 20 people and features well- maintained camping sites, running water and wash rooms.
Camp attendants attend to vistors’ needs during their stay.
The Liuwa Plain is one of Zambia’s 20 national parks, covering an area of 3,600 square kilometres in the south-western part of the country.
It is a place of abundance and diversity, and home to the second largest wildebeest migration in Africa.
Through the efforts of African Parks Zambia and Zambia Wildlife Authority, wildlife species have prospered in the park.
The most prominent example is the astonishing increase in wildebeest numbers from approximately 15,000 animals in 2003 to almost 46,000 in 2013.
Other species that have shown clear increases in population are zebra, red lechwe and tsessebe, among many other species.
