After weeks of speculation, former President Rupiah Bwezani Banda has officially announced his return to active politics.

Speaking at a press briefing at the MMD Secretariat this morning, Mr Banda, fondly referred to as RB, stated that he is the right man for the January 20 2015 presidential election given his past record.

Mr Banda boasted that while serving as republican president, he managed to secure the economy of the country with lower food prices and more jobs saying bag of mealie meal has shot up from K35 when he left office to K75.

He has since accepted the adoption certificate from the National Executive Committee of the Movement for Multi-Party Democracy (MMD) as its Presidential candidate in the forth-coming Presidential Election.

• But MMD National Youth Chairperson Howard Kunda has charged former republican president Rupiah Banda cannot win the January 2015 presidential election.

Mr Kunda, who is Muchinga Member of Parliament, told Mano News that it is unfounded for President Banda to return to politics when he resigned on the basis of allowing the younger generation to take over.

He stated that the time for the crop of old politicians has passed hence the need for youthful leaders.

Mr Kunda, who is also son to late former vice republican president George Kunda, has since backed the candidature of party President Nevers Mumba.

• And the party leadership in Mungwi District has threatened to defect to other political parties if Nevers Mumba is barred from standing as president.

MMD-Mungwi District chairperson, Wilfred Bwalya who was flanked by his Secretary, Benard Mumbi and Youth Secretary, Boniface Chanda told Mano News that calls for Rupiah Banda’s come back are unfounded.

The trio stated that Mr. Banda willingly resigned and retired from politics, noting that his return will only destroy the party he abandoned in 2011.
