The Law Association of Zambia (LAZ) has disclosed that it will join the legal proceeding in a matter in which the transfer of the Instruments of power to Dr Guy Scott as acting President has been challenged.
LAZ president George Chisanga says association will join the proceedings as a friend of the court.
Speaking during a media briefing in Lusaka today, Mr. Chisanga explained this means his association will be an impartial adviser to the court.
Mr. Chisanga, who was franked by his vice Linda Kasonde and LAZ honorary secretary Likando Kalaluka, says the interest of the association in the matter is to guide the court on how it should deliberate and decide the matter.
And Mr. Chisanga has also disclosed that his association has joined calls by the civil society and other stakeholders on the need for candidates who will contest the forthcoming presidential election to make the enactment of a new people driven constitution an election issue in their campaigns.
He says LAZ holds the view that what the nation has experienced following the death of President Michael Sata is merely one example of the need for reforms to the current constitution and how the needs and aspiration of the Zambian people could be better met.
The LAZ president states that his association is thus not only calling for the enactment of a new people driven constitution but that the enactment should be through a legally protected process that will ultimately lead to the adoption of the new constitution through a referendum and enactment by the national assembly without revision before 2016 general elections.
Meanwhile LAZ honorary secretary Likando Kalaluka has called on Information and Broadcasting Permanent Secretary Chanda Kasolo to reverse his directive to political parties that they nominate one person who will be the point of contact to media.
Mr. Kalaluka says this is because such a directive infringes on freedom of expression.
He says should Mr. Kasolo decline to reverse his directive, LAZ will consider taking legal action against him.
