Council workers at Milenge District in Luapula Province have gone on strike demanding to be paid their salaries.

Milenge District ZULAWU Branch Secretary Chilufya Chimpeta said the workers are demanding to be paid their 11 months salary arrears.

Mr Chimpeta disclosed that the workers had a meeting with management but nothing was resolved as management claimed to have no funds.

He said workers have vowed never return for work until their demands are met.

Meanwhile, Milenge Council Secretary Caroline Mpande said the local authority has no funds to offset the salaries for the workers.

She said the council has no strong revenue base adding that the only source of revenue is trade license and cannot manage to pay the workers.

Ms Mpande has since appealed to government to help the local authority to pay its workers.
