Govt calls for decentralization of AGs office

Chipata, November 18, 2014, ZANIS —- Government has called for the decentralization of the office of the Attorney General in order to enhance the dispensation of justice in the country.

Eastern Province Permanent Secretary Chileshe Mulenga says presently government offices charged with responsibility to execute the fair justice they work is hampered due
to lack of proper legal backing.

Dr. Mulenga stated that most institutions in this sector such as the police, prisons and courts are in urgent need of reform if they were to effectively carry out their mandate.

ZANIS reports that he was speaking in Chipata today, when he officially opened a two days Legal and Justice Sector Reform Commission public sittings.

Dr. Mulenga disclosed that the absence of legal services especially in rural areas has led to an increase in unresolved legal conflicts.

He cited the rampant land disputes in the province as one of the many legal conflicts that require proper guidance from the office of the
Attorney General.

He disclosed that Eastern province with an estimated population of two million people only has two legal aid officers making it difficult for
the poop people to have effective legal representation.

Dr. Mulenga has since advised people in the province to make practical submission to the commission to help transform   the legal justice
sector.

And Commission Chairperson Fredrick Chomba said the commission has a mandate to ensure that the findings from the public sittings are
submitted to government.

Justice Chomba noted that this is why members of the public have a task to make submission that will enhance the justice system in the country.
