The ruling Patriotic Front (PF) leadership in Kaputa district of the Northern province has unanimously thrown their weight behind Defence and Justice Minister Edgar Lungu as party candidate in the forth-coming presidential by-election.
The PF members in Kaputa have also refuted claims by the PF leadership in Kasama that the entire party in the Northern province does not support Mr Lungu who is also party Secretary General .
Kaputa PF district chairperson Dickson Chomba said Kaputa was in agreement with PF Members of Parliament and some members of the Central Committee who have endorsed Mr. Lungu as party candidate in the coming polls.
Mr. Chomba added that people in Kaputa will fully support the candidature of Mr Lungu and called on all party members to do so.
He said the party should spare its time and money by going to the general conference to elect a leader when the general members are already in support of Mr Lungu.
Mr. Chomba said this in a walk-in interview with the Zambia News and Information Services (ZANIS) in Kaputa today.
He has pleaded with acting Party and Republican President Guy Scott to listen to the views of the general membership and approve the adoption of Mr. Lungu as PF candidate for the by-election scheduled for January 2015.
He said the party leadership should allow the views of the majority members to be heard and called for unity in the run up to the presidential by-election.
Meanwhile, Mr. Chomba declared Kaputa ready for the presidential by-election saying all the members were waiting for was the adoption of Mr Lungu before it could kick start the campaigns.
The PF is in the process of choosing a candidate to represent the party in the forth-coming presidential by- election which has been necessitated by the death of Republican President Michael Sata on 28 October and was buried on Tuesday this week on November 11.
