A somber mood characterized Kenneth Kaunda International Airport as the body of late Republican President Michael Sata arrived back home from London where he died on Tuesday, 28th October.

Acting President Guy Scott led scores of mourners who include senior government officials, first and third republican presidents Kenneth Kaunda and Rupiah, opposition leaders and diplomats accredited to Zambia among others

Some people including National Revolution Party President Cosmo Mumba collapsed upon seeing the flagged draped casket of the late President, while others could not hold back tears upon sighting the plane carrying the remains of the late President

The chartered plane carrying the President’s body escorted by three Zambia Air Force jets which met it in mid-air touched down at about 10:35 hours.

The late President’s widow Dr Christine Kaseba-Sata was on board the chartered plane together with other family members as well as ministers who had gone to London to facilitate the repatriation of the president’s remains.

The late commander in-chief of the armed forces was accorded a 21-gun salute by the Zambia army as the national anthem played in the background, while Zambia Air Force jets flew past.

The President’s body was then placed on the gun-carriage and taken to Mulungushi International Conference under military escort.

Along the airport and Great east roads, people lined up to catch a glimpse of the late President’s casket.

The remains of President Sata will lie-in-state at Mulungushi International Conference were members of the general public will be allowed to view the body starting tomorrow Sunday, 2nd November.

People will be allowed to view the President’s body everyday between 12:00hrs and 18:00 hrs before he is put to rest at Embassy Park on 11th November, 2014.
