Teachers at Mutala Basic School in Sikonga district are living in fear due to increased  criminal  activities in the area .

The teachers have since vacated the area leaving pupils unattended to.

Sianga Mulondo village acting headman Mukombote Simushi confirmed the development to ZANIS in an interview in Kalabo today.

Mr Simushi lamented that the only three teachers at the school could not return after the August  holiday as they were stranded because thieves got away with their households.

The headman disclosed that recently a group of unknown people terrorized the teachers by storming a one by three classroom block which they use as houses and got away with all the goods.

The windows to the classroom block were shattered leaving the building in a dilapidated state.

Mr Simushi appealed to the Ministry of Education to send married teachers to Mutala school as opposed to the prevailing situation.

He noted that the sending of married teachers to the area would act as an alternative security measure.

The headman further observed that sending married teachers at the school would also enable pupils learning without interruption because at the moment one teacher was on maternity leave while the other two were stranded in Kalabo as a result of the rampant thefts experienced during the holiday.

“I am appealing to the ministry of education to be sending teachers that are married, this is for security reasons and also to avoid teachers moving to and from visiting their spouses leaving pupils unattended to,” Mr Simushi said.
