The Itezhi Tezhi magistrates court in Central province has found a 16-year-old juvenile of Itezhi Tezhi district in central province with a case to answer in a matter in which she is accused of naming three old men as wizards.
And in Chinsali District in Muchinga Province, a Juvenile offender charged with one count of infanticide has appeared in the Chinsali Magistrate’s court.
The named female juvenile was arrested by the Itezhi Tezhi police following complaints from three old men namely, Namasiku Paulosi, George Namangolwa and Shadreck Kazembe that the girl named or accused them of being wizards.
She stood harged with one count of naming or accusing a person of being a wizard contrary to Cap 90 of the Laws of Zambia.
The three elders Paulosi, Namangolwa and Kazembe respectively complained that the female juvenile accused them of having bewitched her late elder sister Catherine Kazembe.
This occurred on 2nd May 2013 between14:00- 15:00 hours in Chibolya compound in Itezhi Tezhi district in central province.
Acting on the matter, the court summoned the suspect’s mother and the three complainants who all gave evidence.
In passing ruling, Magistrates Munalula Mubita stated that he found the accused female juvenile with a case to answer on the charge of naming or accusing the three old men as wizards.
The matter has been adjourned to next week Monday when the juvenile is expected to commence her defense .
If convicted, she will be liable to a fine not exceeding seven hundred and fifty penalty units or imprisonment or without hard labour for any term not exceeding twelve months , or to both.
In Chinsali District of Muchinga District, a juvenile offender charged with one count of infanticide has appeared in the Chinsali Magistrate’s court.
Appearing before Magistrate Shadrick Chanda was a Grade eight pupil of Chinsali Girls Secondary School charged with one count of infanticide.
It is alleged that the juvenile offender on October 2, 2014 willingly and unlawfully caused death of a child less than 12 months contrary to Section 203 of the
Penal code Chapter 87 of the laws of Zambia.
Magistrate Chanda has ordered the juvenile offender to be appearing for mention at Chinsali Magistrate Court until further instructions from Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).
He said the offence committed by the juvenile offender can only be tried in the High Court adding that the juvenile offender will continue to be appearing before him as the court awaits directives from the DPP.
The magistrate has since set October 22, 2014 for the juvenile to appear in Court for mention.
The Juvenile offender has been remanded in custody at Chinsali Police Station.
