ZAMBIA coach Honour Janza says local players are ready to challenge for places in the Chipolopolo squad.
And Russia-based midfielder Chisamba Lungu is confident the Chipolopolo will qualify for the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations despite the unimpressive start.
“They [local players] have improved and I am confident these guys are ready to prove themselves. They have fantastic skill and if I call them [to the national team] then it means I have a lot of confidence in them.
“We need to give them confidence because we also need immediate results. We now have two players’ for every position one local and foreign based,” Janza said.
Janza was speaking in an interview in Lusaka yesterday after a training session at National Heroes Stadium.
He said local players are in his plans for next Saturday’s crucial Group F qualifier against Niger in Niamey.
Janza singled out Bruce Musakanya, Julius Situmbeko, Roderick Kabwe and Shadreck Malambo as players ready to don national colours.
“We are only calling players who should come and prove themselves. Why bring someone to warm the terraces when we have local players like Bruce, Shadreck and Ronald [Kampamba],” he said.
Meanwhile, Lungu said the team is focused for the qualifier against Niger.
“We are committed and focused to achieve our target that of going to Morocco. It has been a rough start but we working hard to succeed at the end of the qualifiers,” he said.
He said the players have confidence in the Janza-led technical bench.
Zambia have one point at par with Niger, five behind Cape Verde.
And Niger coach Gernot Rohr is targeting maximum points over Zambia to remain in the race for the Africa Cup of Nations finals.
“I would say we need at least nine points from the remaining four games to have a realistic chance. It means we have to win our next game [against Zambia] and at least get a point away [Ndola],” Rohr told the Le Republicain.
Rohr was in Europe to assess the foreign-based legion including star striker Moussa Mazzou of Portuguese side CS Maritimo.
