—– Government says promotion of girl child education is key to the country’s achievement of  the millennium development goals (MDGs).

Lusaka Province Permanent Secretary Wamunyima Muwana says  it was because of this that the country needs to invest more in the girl child education

Mr. Muwana said this was possible through the  laying of a strong foundation for girl children through provision of a conducive learning environment.

ZANIS reports that the PS said this during the Kabulonga girls Secondary School’s 60th Anniversary celebration fundraising braii, this afternoon.

“  Government is instrumental in the promotion of girl child education through infrastructure development that has seen the construction and opening of more girls’ schools countrywide, “ the PS said.

He said Kabulonga girls is one of the old schools in Lusaka that remains the icon of the girl child education and the increase in the number of pupils has led to a demand in infrastructure expansion and maintenance.

Mr. Muwana commended the school’s  management and Parent Teacher Association(PTA) for coming up with the initiative of supplementing government efforts of maintenance and rehabilitation of the school infrastructure such as the ablution block.

And Kabulonga Girls Board Chairperson Bright Nyirenda said the school was opened in way back in 1954 hence most of the structures are now dilapidated and need to be rehabilitated.

He said the fund raising braii is aimed at raising funds towards the rehabilitation of the ablution block at an estimated cost of K51,500.
