——Government has congratulated Kabange Mupopo and Saviour Kombe on their outstanding performance at the just-ended International Association for Athletics Federation Inter-Continental Championship in Marrakech, Morocco.

Chief government spokesperson, Joseph Katema, described the athletes’ performance as splendid adding that it is a source of immense pride and honour to the nation.

Mr Katema said government is particularly delighted that Kabange is now ranked number one in Africa and 8th in the world after setting a national record breaking 50.87 seconds in the 400 metres heat while representing Africa.

According to a statement made available to ZANIS in Lusaka today, Mr Katema said it is a remarkable debut season for the 21 year-old international footballer who clocked 53.44 seconds in her first one lap race as recently as this April.

Mr Katema, who is also Minister of Information and Broadcasting Services, said Kabange’s excellence amidst formidable opposition from the Americas, Asia-Pacific, Europe and other parts of the world that converged on Marrakech, is testimony that Zambian athletes have the necessary skill and capacity to compete at international level.

And Mr Katema said government is further impressed with Kombe who helped Africa to its second ever win at the continental competition since 1992.

He said running in a team comprising Wayde van Niekerk of South Africa, and Isaac Makwala of Botswana, Kombe did Africa and Zambia proud by winning the 4×400 relay beating the Americans comprising former Olympic Champion  LaShawn Meritt, Olympic Silver Medalist, Leguelin Santos and relay specialist, Chris Brown.

Mr Katema noted that Kabange and Kombe’s exploits are a sign that government’s ongoing investment in the sports sector is yielding desired results and added that government’s resolve is to continue prioritising the sports sector as a generator for job and wealth creation.
