—–Lunga Council Secretary Oswel Mpofu says Community Led Total sanitation (CLTS) should not be considered for the district.

Mr. Mpofu says though Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) is aimed at behavioral change and has worked well in other districts it would not work in Lunga because the area is swampy.

Speaking to ZANIS in an interview this morning at Lunga Council Offices Mr. Mpofu says it was difficult to construct a toilet in Lunga district due to the high water levels in the area.

The Council secretary says one cannot dig more than 15 centimeters without finding water in the ground adding that since pit latrines require to dig for at least six meters deep Lunga district does not have such dry areas to allow for that.

Mr Mpofu instead suggested that consideration should be made to construct a sewerage system when planning for such projects in the district.

And the Water and Sanitation unit says surveillance works on CLTS have already been done by AKROS a consultancy firm contracted by the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund (UNICEF)  Firm called AKROS.
