Voting is underway in Vubwi, Kasenegwa by-elections

Voting has started in the Kasenengwa and Vubwi Parliamentary by-elections with polling stations opening at exactly 06:00 hours at Chiparamba sub centre and Vubwi Basic School.


At Kasenengwa Chiparamba Sub Centre Polling Station a queue of about 100 people were waiting to cast their votes by 06:00 hours.

The polling station has 1,950 registered voters.

Presiding officer Annie Malamula announced the opening of the polling
station.
 

ZANIS reports that Chiparamba ward has the second highest number of registered voters of 7,700 with nine polling stations.

Meanwhile, voting started on a good note at Mtaya Primary school polling station with over 100 people turning up to vote by 06:50 hours.


Presiding Officer Bob Howard said 20 people had cast their votes by 06: 50 hours at the station which has 1,301 registered voters.


Meanwhile, voting was delayed at Chinyumbu Roman Catholic polling station which has 873 registered voters as staff at the polling station had a problem with the official stamp.


By 06:20 hours, voting had not yet started but about 60 people had already lined up waiting to cast their votes.


Presiding Officer, Chimwemwe Nkuna told ZANIS that the time for voting will be extended as the process was delayed.


And voting started on a poor note at Chiwawa school polling station where only six people had cast their vote by 07:30 hours.


Presiding Officer William Mphande said the station has 1,100 registered voters.


Four candidates are contesting the Kasenengwa parliamentary seat which fell vacant after the nullification of Victoria Kalima of MMD as area MP due to electoral malpractices.


The seat is being contested by  Gideon Zulu of the ruling PF, Khumbiza Daka of UNIP, Timothy Nyirenda of the UPND and Victoria Kalima who is re-contesting the seat on the MMD ticket.

Meanwhile, in Vubwi, about 30 voters lined up to cast their vote as early as 05:00 hours at Vubwi Basic School in Vubwi ward.

Presiding Officer Anderson Mbewe, announced the start of voting at 06:00 hours at the polling station which has a total of 1,036 voters.

 

84 people had already cast their vote by 07:00 hours.

At Mbozi School polling station, 79 people had cast their votes by 08:00 hours.

According to the Presiding officer Joseph Mwanza, the station has 989 registered voters.

Vubwi constituency has a total number of 18,084 registered voters.

The Vubwi Parliamentary seat fell vacant following the nullification of the MMDs Eustarckio Kazonga for electoral malpractices in the 2011 general elections.

Five political parties are participating in the Vubwi Parliamentary by-election and these are Margaret Miti of the ruling PF, Alfonso Phiri of the UPND, Charles Nyoka of the FDD and Lucas Phiri of UNIP while Dr Kazonga is re-contesting the seat on the MMD ticket.
