ONE of the suspects charged with the murder of former Wusakile member of Parliament (MP) Barnabas Chella has died in prison, the Kitwe High Court heard yesterday.
This is in a case in which Frederick Mulusa, Robby Mwelwa Chobo, Joyce Mwansa, Erick Mendulo, Samson Chisala, Kenneth Chisanga and Derrick Kalunga, are charged with the murder of Mr Chella.
It is alleged that Mulusa, Chobo, Mwansa, Mendulo, Chisala, Chisanga and Kalunga on September 5 last year in Kitwe, jointly and whilst acting together murdered Mr Chella.
They all pleaded not guilty.

When the accused persons were called to the dock, Kitwe High Court judge-in-charge Catherine Makungu observed that Chobo was not present.
“Where is A2 [Accused person number two],” she asked.

Acting principal State advocate Chali Hambayi informed the court that Chobo had died.
“I just received confirmation from the prison authorities confirming the death of the second accused person in this matter. He died on August 13 this year,” Mrs Hambayi said.
She availed the court with a certificate of death, a burial permit and an official letter from the senior superintendent at Kamfinsa State Prison in Kitwe to confirm that Chobo had died.

Mrs Justice Makungu adjourned the case to September 30 for judgment.
