UNHCR Deputy Chief arrives


Lusaka, August 27, ZANIS—The United Nations Deputy High Commissioner for Refugees Alexander Aleinikoff has arrived in the country for an official visit.


Mr Alexander Aleinikoff who arrived in the country this afternoon was received at the Kenneth Kaunda International Airport by Home Affairs Deputy Minister Nickson Chilangwa, Foreign Affairs Permanent Secretary Peter Mwaba and staff from the UNHCR.


Mr Aleinikoff said his visit to Zambia is to see how the implementation of the Strategic Framework for the Local Integration of Former Refugees in the country was being undertaken.


He stated that the commission and the Zambia government are working on the program of local integration for some refugees camps in the country.


And UNHCR Southern Africa Regional Representative Clementine Nkweta Salami commended government for government for its cooperation and commitment to the programme and successfully repatriating and integrating refugees in the country.


Ms Salami stated that governments of in the southern region have exhibited commitment to ensuring that refugees from various countries are well taken care off when hosted and in the process of repatriating them to their countries of origin.


 The UNHCR Deputy Commissioner is scheduled to meet Vice President Guy Scott, hold consultative meetings with senior government officials, Diplomatic Corps, UN agencies and later visit the Meheba Refugee Settlement camp in Solwezi district.


The UN Deputy High Commissioner for Refugees’ visit to Zambia comes at a crucial time when the Zambian government and UNHCR are pursuing the program of local integration for some refugees.


Zambia currently hosts 54,046 refugees and others of concern in two refugee settlements.
