Ministry of Commerce, Trade and Industry permanent secretary Siazongo Siakalenge has called on companies to package their products in response to market dynamics of the country.
Mr Siakalenge said in a speech read for him by director of planning Mateo Kaluba in Mazabuka on Thursday at the launch of Zambia Sugar’s 500-gramme pack that the health of the people is always a priority for Government.
“Government is concerned about the practice of unhygienic re-packaging of sugar and other products into small packets. It is my hope that the introduction of the smaller packs will help curb this practice,” he said.
He, however, said Government would continue to support the growth of the local manufacturing industries.
Mr Siakalenge said there is no country in the world that can maintain an economy without first growing their local manufacturing base.
Earlier, Zambia Sugar managing director Aubrey Chibumba said the company has introduced the 500-gramme packs in an effort to respond to the requirement of the market desires.
Dr Chibumba said the new packs will provide equitable distribution of service, and people from different walks of life can afford the product.
“We invest in appropriate technology. We develop and take care of our employees and develop new products to provide more options to our customers and this is what makes us a successful company.
“The introduction of the 500-gramme pack is just an example of our responsiveness to the challenges that we face,” he said.
He also said the continued high cost of doing business in the country has led to complaints about the price of the commodity being high compared to other countries.
He, however, said the company will continue to respond to customers’ needs by introducing various products to suit their needs.
Meanwhile, Dr Chibumba said the company’s long-term strategy is to introduce more sugar products and diversify into products like ethanol, alcohol and CO2, among others.
