POLICE have arrested a miner who was among those that damaged Konkola Copper Mines (KCM) property worth thousands of Kwacha while demanding for better salaries and conditions of service.
Copperbelt Police chief Joyce Kasosa confirmed the arrest and named the miner as Keagan Singongo, of house number five, Kapisha in Chingola.
Ms Kasosa said Mr Singongo, who works for Elion Company contracted by KCM, was arrested for his alleged involvement in the riots that left a trail of destruction to property at KCM Nchanga Flats.
“We apprehended one miner by the name of Keagan Singongo, a worker of Elion Company, and is currently in police custody in connection with the KCM protest,” Ms Kasosa said.
She said the miners who were protesting against alleged poor working conditions upon being dispersed by police after they had gathered at the entrance of KCM mine plant went and regrouped at the KCM flats where they caused havoc.
Ms Kasosa said the property the rioting miners damaged, included vehicles, among them, three Toyota Corollas, a Toyota Spacio, a Toyota Gaya, a Toyota Allion and a Mark II.
She said the miners also shattered windows for a block of flats.
She said Police were however still investing the matter involving the KCM riots.
