State of storage sheds worries union

Mkushi, Aug 21, 2014, ZANIS—Management of Mkushi District Cooperative Union(MKDCU) has called for increased attention towards improving the outlook of grain storage infrastructure in the area.

MKDCU General Manager Harrison Kalota told ZANIS that there was need to focus  attention on Food Reserve Agency satellite depots that exist in various parts of the district.

Mr. Kalota  observed that there was need to work towards ensuring that satellite depots are improved into proper storage sheds that could protect grain from adverse weather effects  such as rain and moisture from ground water.

He defended his observations saying that unexpected rains should not be ruled out amongst other manifestations of changes in climatic pattern.

He said his office had identified the Tazara Corridor A and B area as being among localities that deserved serious consideration with regards to grain storage infrastructure.

And Mkushi District CommissionerLuka Mwamba recently said that government was encouraging increased private sector  investment in storage infrastructures.

Mr. Mwamba said that the issue of in adequate storage facilities in the district was still a major concern adding that the private sector could help address the issue by investing in more storage infrastructures.

He took the opportunity to commend farmers for having recorded good crop output from the 2013—2014 farming season, and assured that Government was keenly tracking all their concerns regarding storage facilities.
