——–Nyimba District Commissioner George Phiri says government has disbursed 128,650 kwacha to various women clubs in the district.

Mr Phiri says he is happy with the support government is rendering to the women clubs in the district.

He noted that the assistance the women clubs are receiving from the state will go a long way in eradicating poverty at household level.

ZANIS reports that the District Commissioner was speaking in an interview in Nyimba District, yesterday.

Mr Phiri cited hammer mills, seeing machine, peanut butter making machines ploughs and treadle pumps as some of the various equipments women clubs have benefited through the women empowerment programme.

The District Commissioner disclosed that 35 women clubs have been empowered under the ministry of Gender and Child Development and the ministry of Community Development, Mother and Child Health.

He expressed optimism that with the continued support from government women clubs will greatly contribute in scaling up the fight against poverty.

Mr Phiri said the funds and equipment government has empowered the women groups is aimed at making women self reliant.

However the District Commissioner bemoaned the high illiteracy levels among the women citing it as a challenge.

Mr Phiri also laminated that gender based violence and early marriages among the girl child are on the raise.

However, he hoped that through interventions such as the women empowerment programme cases of gender based violence will reduce.
