Govt ready to support arts and culture

Solwezi, August 14,2014, ZANIS……Northwestern province Minister Nathaniel Mubukwanu says government stands ready to support initiatives that are aimed at improving the culture and art sector.

Mr Mubukwanu said government is aware of the important role that culture and art can play in contributing to national and personal development if well supported.

He said government is making frantic efforts to promote and preserve culture through the many projects it has embarked on such as the rehabilitation and construction of infrastructure where training and production will be conducted.

ZANIS reports that Mr Mubukwanu was speaking in Solwezi yesterday when he officiated at this year’s three- day National Schools Arts Association of Zambia performing and fine arts festival.

The festival is being held under the theme showcasing 50 years of appreciating cultural transformations in arts.

Mr Mubukwanu said government is committed to addressing the challenges that are affecting culture and arts development in schools.

Speaking earlier , NASAAZ national chairperson David Asumani appealed to government to refocus its attention towards arts and culture because of the potential it has to equip pupils with survival skills.

Mr Asumani said the association faced challenges in organizing this year’s festival due to lack of funds as most administrators in schools have prioritized sports than arts and culture.

The festival has attracted participation from all provinces except Luapula and Muchinga provinces.
