Stakeholders challenged to change strategy in GBV fight

Livingstone, Aug 7/14, ZANIS—–Livingstone District Commissioner, Omar Munsanje, has challenged stakeholders in the tourist capital to change the manner in which they implement strategies aimed at combating Gender Based Violence (GBV).

Mr Munsanje condemned the current trend which saw stakeholders attending workshops on how best to combat GBV but failing to implement information acquired on how best to reduce the detrimental vice within communities.

He reiterated that effective implementation was a key in combating GBV.

He noted that GBV cases were increasing countrywide, adding that children were not spared as they had also fallen victim to the vice, sometimes with their parents being perpetrators.

Mr Munsanje said this in Livingstone today during a workshop held to form an Anti-Gender Based Violence Task Force, organised by the United Nations Development Plan (UNDP) and the Ministry of Gender and Child Development.

He explained that the task force would be an extension of the Gender Sub-Committee whose primary objective was to ensure stakeholders at provincial and district levels facilitated strategies to reduce GBV.

And United Nations Development Plan (UNDP) Gender Analyst, Delia Yerokum, said once established, the task force was expected to form an integrated, multi-sectoral approach to the implementation of the GBV Act.

Ms Yerokum further said the task force would be tasked to ensure GBV survivors had increased access to timely and appropriate health services, access by GBV survivors to an efficient justice delivery system as well as access to protection and support services.

She commended the Irish and Swedish Governments and the United Nations for the financial support they were rendering to the fight against GBV.
