Public warned against market butcheries

Kitwe, Aug 6, 2014, ZANIS ……… The Kitwe city council has warned members of the public not to buy  meat products sold in the markets as it was not safe for human consumption.

Kitwe City Council Public Relations manager Dorothy Sampa made the warning in view of the reports of cattle wrestlers using poisonous chemicals to kill ‘the animals and whose meat ends up in markets sold to unsuspecting members of the public.

Ms Sampa urged members of the public to avoid buying meat products from undesignated selling points especially from the street as their sources may not be safe .

She also urged the members of the public to immediately report to the council if they have suspicion that some meat products being sold on the street especially by vendors was contaminated.

Ms Sampa however said the council was conducting surveillance inspections in all places where food was prepared and sold as such cases of unsafe meat on the market can easily be detected and curbed.

There have been reports of cattle wrestlers using poisonous chemicals to kill the animals whose meat they later sell to unsuspecting members of the public in markets and on the streets.

Meanwhile, Ms Sampa has disclosed that the Kitwe City council was observing the Local Government week under which it was interacting with the members of the public and explaining its operations and challenges.

The Local Government runs from 3rd to 9th August and will be followed by commemoration of the actual day on the 10th.
