Northern prisons get State boost

Kasama, August 5, 2014, ZANIS–Government has procured assorted materials worth K450 000 for prisons in the northern.

Prisons Service Director of Planning Senior Assistant Commissioner John Yumbe revealed this when he handed over mattresses, blankets and uniforms for  inmates at Milima State Prison yesterday.

Commissioner Yumbe said it was the duty of the Prisons Service to provide correctional service in a humane environment, adding that efforts are being made to improve the standards of prisons and

Prisoners.

He said Government was aware that the conditions in the few prisons in the northern province were bad.

Mr. Yumba revealed that government had also released K2.5 million for the complete rehabilitation of Milima State Prison in Kasama and further urged the prisoners to take good care of the mattresses and blankets.

And speaking on behalf of the prisoners Patrick Simwanza said the inmates were grateful for the good gesture of providing beddings to the prison saying this made them feel recognized by the government despite their offences committed against the public.

Mr Simwanza however appealed to the government to consider purchasing plates and cooking pots for Milima Prison.
