Govt targets art and culture promotion

Mitete, August 5, 2014, ZANIS….Government says it places great importance to the arts and cultural sector.

Lukulu District Commissioner Precious Muyenga said this in a speech ready for her by Mitete district Administrative Officer Evans Kawila during the Mitete/Lukulu districts Arts and Cultural celebrations.

The celebrations took place yesterday in Lukulu district.

Ms Muyenga said government has high regard for Culture hence officers under the Ministry of Tourism and Arts are in place for the purpose of exposing and training artists in their various categories.

The DC stated that it was also the duty of government to promote arts and culture as fundamental elements of sustainable development and the interaction among various categories of artists.

She added that the main reason his Excellency President Michael Sata creating the Ministry of Tourism and Arts was that artists concerns are directly taken care of by the Ministry and to ensure the creative industry grows and contributes to the economic growth of the country.

Ms Muyenga further said the significance of arts and culture cannot be overemphasized adding that it enhances the identity of a people as it marks a sense of their history, patriotism and unity .

She said government shall support visual and performing artists by incorporating them in its programs while encouraging public and private investment in the development of arts and culture infrastructure in cities, towns and villages.

The DC further thanked the National Arts Council, the Provincial Cultural Office, the office of the District Cultural Officer and District Arts Advisory Committee of Lukulu for making the event a success.

Meanwhile, various artists both from Mitete and Lukulu districts turned up in good numbers for the celebrations which end today.
