Govt welcomes OVC support

Mkushi, July 30, 2014, ZANIS—Government has welcomed renewed multi-sector efforts that are aimed at boosting the plight of Orphans Vulnerable Children (OVCs) in Mkushi District.

Mkushi  District Commissioner(DC) Luka Mwamba said this during a planning workshop organized by Save the Children Organisation at Mariana Motel in Mkushi.

Mr. Mwamba said government was gratified to learn that Mkushi is among districts that had been selected to pilot the ‘Zambia Rising’ OVC support project.

He said that the plight of OVCs required commitment andcombined efforts from government and the NGOs in thematic areas such as education, child protection and health.

He called for improved networking from all stakeholders in the district adding that the ‘Zambia Rising’ project had the full support of government.

Save the Children Coordinator for Central Province Jackson Phiri disclosed that Mkushi was among the three districts that had been selected to pilot the project in region.

Mr. Phiri said that the project was designed to run for five years and was being funded by the United States Aid for International Development (USAID).

During the same forum, Central Province Social Welfare Officer George Akayombokwa commended Save the Children for providing technical support towards the formulation of a Joint Action Plan for Mkushi.

Mr. Akayombokwa pointed out that planning was a cardinal aspect that would boost the multi sector efforts involved in the activities aimed at addressing the plight of OVCs in the district.

The  workshop was attended  by participants from Government departments, non-governmental and Faith Based Organsations.
