Kapiri Mposhi, July 28, 2014, ZANIS – Workers at the Tanzania Zambia Railways Authority (TAZARA) in Kapiri Mposhi district have appealed to the Disaster Management and Mitigation Unit (DMMU) to send them relief food .

Meanwhile ZANIS in Kapiri Mposhi reports that the strike by unionized workers at TAZARA has entered day five.

Crews and Allied Workers Union of Zambia (CRAWUZ) president, Bevis Silumbe said TAZARA workers and their families may lose their lives due to hunger in their homes.

Mr. Silumbve told ZANIS that the employees have no money to fend for their families because they have not received salaries for five months.

He said government should therefore move in through the DMMU to provide relief food to the families in TAZARA compound.

“There is now a disaster in TAZARA compound  … I’m hence appealing to government to assist these families before we start losing lives of people from hunger,” Mr. Silumbe said.

He said most households in TAZARA compound have had their water and electricity cut off by utility companies due to nonpayment of bills.

Last week wives and family members of TAZARA employees marched to the District Administration Offices to complain over nonpayment of salaries.

The family members also complained that government school managements in the district were excluding their children from learning due to nonpayment of fees and failure to meet  requirements such as shoes, uniforms and books.
