African women continue to lag behind their male counterparts in economic activities due to a hostile operating environment that militates against females, Zambia’s Finance Minister Alexander Chikwanda said Friday.Addressing an economic empowerment summit for women in the capital Lusaka, Chikwanda noted that the environment prevailing in most African countries made it difficult for women to successfully operate businesses.

He said although it was true that women played a critical role in running the economies of their countries, most of their efforts went unnoticed and undocumented.

Founder the Women’s Economic Empowerment Forum, Graca Machel observed that women had the capacity to contribute to Africa’s economic development but lacked support to grow their enterprises.

She said with financial and technical support women were capable of contributing to economic development in a significant way because they were hard working but had been hampered from doing so because of financial challenges.
