Ngabwe district gets autonomy

Kapiri Mposhi, 2 July, 2014, ZANIS – The newly created Ngabwe district in Central province has finally been administratively detached from Kapiri Mposhi.

This followed the successful sharing of assets, liabilities and Human Resources between Kapiri Mposhi and Ngabwe district Councils today.

During the meeting at which the boundary narrative description between Kapiri  Mposhi and Ngabwe districts was disseminated the two councils agreed that the new district will however for the next six months be receiving K20, 000 monthly operational grant from Kapiri Mposhi Council.

Recently, Local Government and Housing Minister Emmanuel Chenda issued Statutory Instrument Number 39 of 2014 to establish and create a Council establishment for Ngabwe district.

This followed President Michael Sata’s declaration of Ngabwe situated some 250 Kilometer away in the western part of Kapiri Mposhi district and consisting of Ngabwe and Mkubwe Chiefdoms as a new district in 2013.

Meanwhile, Mukubwe and Ngabwe Wards opposition MMD councilors have commended government for ensuring that the establishment of the new district was realized.

In their farewell message, the two councilors observed that the elevation of Ngabwe to a district status will accelerate development in the area.

Mukubwe Ward Councilor Mervious Zwaoh noted that the new district stands to benefit from various developments through the devolution of government offices from Kapiri Mposhi.

And Ngabwe Ward Councilor Borden Kalebuka urged all government ministries and departments to expedite their movement into the new district.

Mr. Kalebuka observed that President Sata’s elevation of Ngabwe to a district to facilitate development will be futile if certain government departments shunned  establishing offices in the area.

“We want to see a corresponding action from other government departments and not just the council … civil servants should also be willing to come, stay and work here so that we move at an acceptable pace in creating and developing this district,” Mr. Kalebuka said.

Recently, government appointed key personnel that include a District Commissioner, District Administrative Officer, District Education Board Secretary (DEBS) and other essential staff to operate from Ngabwe.

Government has set aside K500, 000 in the 2014 national budget to put up office accommodation and other infrastructure in the new district.

  1. .I come from Kapiri Mposhi area and I have always wanted to see Kapiri re-demarcated, this is highly commendable.Kapiri constituency was just too big for one MP..It was always my desire to see this come into reality.Thank you your excellence for the job well done. You have created not only a district but job opportunities as well.I agree with the suggestion to change the name from Ngabwe to Lukanga district or something else.
