The National Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Programme (NRWSSP) has embarked on training more than 30 people in Community Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) in Mufumbwe District of North Western province.

The CLTS programme is a joint venture between government and UNICEF aimed at improving sanitation coverage in the country at community level.

NRWSSP programme Coordinator in Mufumbwe Kajila Likomeno says 34 community members will be trained as sanitation champions in Mufumbwe this year.

Mr Likomeno disclosed that this would bring the number of trained community champions to 64 following training of 30 sanitation champions in 2012 under the CLTS programme.

Mr Likomeno was speaking in Mufumbwe today during a training workshop for sanitation champions.

He further urged the trainees to work hard in reducing open defecation in the district.

Meanwhile, NRWSSP facilitator Nelson Mfuni says the NRWSSP wants to increase access to sanitation in communities from  1,200,000 this year to about 3,000,000 next year.

Mr Mfuni said this would be through increased collaboration between government, non-governmental organisations, and stakeholders.

Mr Mfuni stressed that it was the desire of government to provide access to safe water and proper sanitation in line with the vision 2030.
