Mazabuka man dies after drinking Kachasu

A DRINKING spree ended up tragically on Wednesday when a 57-year-old man of Mazabuka died after consuming an illicit brew commonly known as Kachasu.
Adam Hamabuyu of Musoma Village in Chief Hanjalika’s area, died shortly after consuming the alcohol suspected to have been laced with poison at a named drinking place in the village.
Southern Province Deputy Police chief,  Milner Muyambango confirmed the incident in an interview.
Mr Muyambango said Mr Hamabuyu was allegedly poisoned on Wednesday around 18:00 hours while on a drinking spree with some villagers.
He said police have since apprehended four men, a women and a girl of the same village in connection with the alleged poisoning of Mr Hamabuyu.
“Mr Hamabuyu died on Wednesday after drinking Kachasu, which could have been poisoned and there are pointers indicating that the six suspects whom police are holding onto could be responsible for the incident,” Mr Muyambango said.
He named the four male suspects as Andrew Moonga, 71, Wise Mweene, 35, Luckson Ng’andu, 50, and Moment Mukonda, 38.
The two females are Maria Moonga, 43, and Honesty Moonga, 15, both of Musoma village.
He said the suspects were in custody and police have instituted investigations while a postmortem was yet to be conducted.
