Kalungwishi Sugar Estate catches Namibia’s eyes

Kasama, 22^nd June 2014 -ZANIS – NAMIBIAN High Commissioner to Zambia Leonard Nambalu says he was impressed by the operations of Kalungwishi Sugar Estate in Kasama.

Ambassador Nambalu says he was certain that activities at the estate were worth emulating by his country.

He said he was going to pass on the information learnt to Namibian businessmen so that they can also utilize the perennial rivers in Namibia for the country to grow its own sugar.

Ambassador Nambalu said Zambia and Namibia shared a lot of natural resources though the economic potential of the two countries had not been fully exploited to benefit local people.

The Namibian envoy said this after touring the multi-million kwacha sugar estate in Kasama, yesterday.

He stated that the two nations needed to partner in spearheading economic development just like they worked together during the struggle for independence.

At the 380 hectare Sugar Estate, the emissary was taken on a conducted tour of the planting, harvesting and processing procedures of the estate.

And estate general manager Engineer Derrick Sianga said Kalungwish Sugar was the only sugar company in the Northern part of Zambia.

He said his company was one of the biggest industries offering quality products and employment to the people in the area.

Sianga commended the government for the support rendered to the company, saying there was need for more agro-based investments especially in the rural parts of Zambia.

He said currently, the company was supplying sugar in different packages to all parts of Zambia especially Lusaka and the Copperbelt provinces.

Ambassador Nambalu who was on a familiarization tour of Northern Province also visited Mpulungu Harbour in Mpulungu and Chishimba falls and the Mwela rocks in Kasama.
