Kalabo, June 14,2014, ZANIS,  —-  Government has reaffirmed its commitment to construct more housing units to mitigate accommodation shortages in the teaching fraternity especially in rural areas.

Education deputy minister David Mabumba says his ministry would continue to ensure that each school built came with housing units as a transition measure to critical accommodation shortages.

The minister was speaking when he paid a courtesy call on Kalabo District Commissioner Masela Chinyama at her office yesterday.

Mr Mabumba said he was aware of the challenges teachers faced in terms of accommodation and transport and that government was doing everything possible to rectify the problem.

He explained that funding was at the moment the biggest challenge adding that with commitment and determination, it was possible to achieve.

“Funding is a challenge but the quickest intervention is upgrading, over time things will change. It is government responsibility to put things in place and people will be able to see change for themselves,” Mr Mabumba said.

The minister noted that the completion of Mongu /Kalabo road would lessen the transportation burden of building materials unlike was the prevailing situation.

Earlier the District Commissioner Masela Chinyama told the minister that there were inadequate teaching personnel in the district due to lack of accommodation, a development that had adversely affected pupil’s performance.

Mrs Chinyama said in some schools one teacher was forced to handle all classes from grade one to seven.
