Senior Chief Mukuni of the Toka-Leya people of Southern Province has argued that the recognition of a Chief by the Head of State alone does not make one a Chief in the eyes of the subjects.

Chief Mukuni explains that in the eyes of the people there are many processes required to be followed for one to be Chief of which recognition by the Head of State is just one of them.

Chief Mukuni has told QFM News in an interview that Tradition must be respected because it has always been there before governments where formed.

He states that one is a Chief in the eyes of his people more than the recognition by the Head of State.

Chief Mukuni further explains that the reason why Chiefs are gazetted is to enable them get allowances from the government.

He adds that one can be Chief without getting subsidies from the government as long as he is recognized by his people.

On Monday, Chiefs and Traditional Affairs Minister Professor Nkandu Luo told a media briefing that as long as one is not recognized by the head of state they do not qualify to be Chief under the Chiefs Act.

  1. Chief Mukuni is spot on, the ball is now rolling let more chiefs add their voice to nip in the bud government or state house meddling in succession affairs.

  2. It seems the majority of Bembas are ok with the state of affairs as they have been voiceless about the chitimukulu issue. The bembas who have spoken are politicians and their sentiments have been taken as mere politicking.
