Government has set aside K900,000 for the construction of new student’s hostels and staff houses at Solwezi School of Education in Solwezi.

This came to light when Youth and Sport Minister, Chishimba Kambwili, addressed hundreds of youths at Aaso Hotel in Solwezi yesterday.

Mr Kambwili, who was in the company of North-western province Youth Co-ordinator, Damiano Chishimba and Solwezi District Commissioner, Chrispin Likando, told the gathering that government is in a hurry to improve education facilities in the province.

The minister also said renovations of classrooms at Solwezi Teachers’ College were already under way and progressing well.

Meanwhile, scores of Chantete mining workers who attended the meeting called on Mr Kambwili as acting Labour Minister to compel First Quantum Minerals (FQM) to reverse its decision to terminate their company’s contract with the mining firm.

The workers told the minister that over 500 employees of Chantete Mining Services will lose their jobs if nothing is done to stop FQM from terminating their company’s contract with the mining giant.

But Mr Kambwili advised the workers to engage the office of the District Commissioner through their union, adding that officials from the Ministry of Labour are already on the ground investigating the matter.

Mr Kambwili is North-western province to inspect youth funded projects.
