—The Eastern Province Medical Directorate has urged all District Medical Officers in the region to maintain high standards of hygiene at health facilities.

Provincial Medical Officer, Kennedy Malama, said District Community Medical Officers (DCMOs) should ensure that health facilities in the province were cleaner than they are.

Dr Malama challenged all the districts in the region to make health facilities as models by making them clean all the time.

ZANIS reports that the Provincial Medical Officer said this when he officially opened a three day Provincial Integrated meeting held at Luangwa House in Chipata District.

Dr Malama implored the district officers to put the issue of cleanliness on the agenda of monitoring health facilities to ensure those responsible for particular health facilities did not slacken.

‘’I want to urge you to ensure that the health facilities are cleaner than the way they are. Health facilities that are dirty result in chances of patients or clients getting diseases being very high,’’ he said.

Dr Malama said the health sector in the region had started well in terms of cleanliness by putting a coat of paint on some structures but stopped on the way.

He called on participants to ensure they included in the action point a component of cleaning health facilities.
