Unionized workers at the Times of Zambia have gone on strike demanding payment of three months’t salary arrears.

The workers are also demanding that management reverse transfers of employees affected after the last sitting-in-protest in March.

And the Zambia Union of Journalists says it received a notice of the strike action in a letter dated 2nd June, 2014 signed by all the three chapel presidents.

ZUJ General Secretary Angela Chishimba in a statement to QFM News says the union is appealing to government to intervene by recapitalizing the institution.

Ms Chishimba says union national leadership has made efforts to engage the government through the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting service on several occasion with regards the plight of the workers.

She has cautioned management at the Times of Zambia against taking decisions that will further agitate the situation.

Meanwhile UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema says it is disheartening to hear that employees at the government owned newspaper has gone for three months without pay.

Mr Hichilema in a statement issued to QFM wonders how the families of the workers are surviving.

He has accused management at the Times of Zambia of buying expensive personal to holder vehicles while employees are going without pay for such a length period of time.
