The Young Women’s Christian Association (YWCA) in Northern Province has taken a swipe at men who are in the habit of abusing young girls sexually.

Commenting on the rise in reports of school going girls falling pregnant, YWCA regional coordinator Justina Mubanga said the rate is alarming.

Ms Mubanga said it is unjustified for men to abuse girls at a young age and end up ruining their future.

And Ms Mubanga has urged parents and guardians to openly talk about issues of sex with their children.

Lately, there has been a rise in the number of school going children falling pregnant with Eastern Province having over 69 school girls getting pregnant in this year’s first term alone.

And in a related development, Northern Province Anti Voter Apathy Project-AVAP Coordinator Christopher Chikwanda has expressed concern at the increasing reports of early marriages in most parts of rural areas in the region.

Mr Chikwanda told Mano News yesterday that this is detrimental to the development of the country’s maternal health.

He has since called on traditional, civic leaders and the ministry of education and other Non-governmental Organizations to consider conducting sensitization programs regarding the high number of school going girls getting married at the expense of education.

This came to light when the regional AVAP Coordinator toured Kasama’s Lukashya constituency to conduct an on the spot check of various schools.
