Isaac Chansa netted a brace as Zanaco brushed aside Indeni 4-0 in a week nine match played at Sunset Stadium on Sunday. Rodrick Kabwe and Mathews Macha contributed a goal each as the 2012 league champions moved to the top of the standings for the first time, replacing Power Dynamos who have been at the top for nine weeks.

The match started on a quick note with both sides looking for an early goal and the first chance came in the second minute when Macha’s tame effort was saved by Peter Njobvu in goal for Indeni. The vistors’ chance came in the fifth minute when Djunes Kanda’s free header was tipped over and behind by Allan Chibwe for the first corner of the match.

From the resultant corner, the visitors could have taken an early lead but Moses Lolozi sent his free header over the crossbar.

The best chance of the early exchanges fell to Rodric Kabwe who shot over and wide with only goalkeeper to beat after Moses Phiri’s square pass into the area was missed by Indeni defenders.

Five minutes later Isaac Chansa was more clinical as he drove home a ferocious effort to beat Njobvu and put the hosts in the driving seat.
Rodrick Kabwe increased the advantage seventeen minutes later as he rose highest to nod in Augustine Mulenga’s corner at the near post.

Lewis Macha put the game beyond the visitors five minutes after the break when he reacted quickest to to follow up on Kabwe’s effort which Njobvu failed to handle first time.

Moses Phiri and Samson Chilupe came close to increasing the tally in the 57th and 65th minutes respectively but it was Isaac Chansa who hammered the last nail into the coffin when he scored with a header from Phiri’s cross.

Zanaco coach Aggrey Chiyangi told fazfootball.com in a post-match interview that his team had shot to the summit because of good preparations. Chiyangi added that the preparations were focused on winning the league as well as preparing for continental competitions.
“The medium term goal is to win the league but we have to look beyond that and ask ourselves what next. We can’t start thinking about the champions league after winning the league. If you set the goal of winning the league then you have to plan for competitions after winning the league,” Chiyangi said.

“So far the performance of our team was good. But being on top of the league will put us under a lot of pressure because every team will want to beat us. We want the team to play differently because we have to look at the bigger picture; the bigger picture is that if we win the league we have to follow that up with a good performance in caf club competitions,” he added.

Chiyangi also singled out Chansa for praise.

“So far today he has performed very well. The goodness is that despite not playing he has been training with us,” said Chiyangi.

And Indeni coach Stephen Mwansa said he was disappointed to register a heavy defeat after holding champions Nkana to a goalless draw a week ago.

“Today I am very disappointed. After playing well against Nkana we expected to hold Zanaco but my players’ attitude was not good. We started very well but they allowed Zanaco to take advantage of a lapse on the left wing and thereafter they became nervous. That was the biggest challenge,” Mwansa said.

Indeni play host to Nakambala Leopards on May 24 while Zanaco travel to Konkola Mine Police on the same date.
