It has been observed that people living with HIV/AIDS living in Liuwa National Park in Kalabo District are not adhering to medication for fear of being attacked by animals.

This is according to a report presented to the District Development Coordinating Committee (DDCC) and made available to ZANIS in Kalabo District, today.

The report revealed that an undisclosed number of people living with HIV/AIDS in the district especially in Liuwa were not adhering to medication because they had to wait to move in a group when crossing the park for fear of being attacked by animals.

It was further reported that inadequate ART centers in the district also made it difficult for patients to access medication as they have to cover long distances to the nearest health center.

“There were a compound of factors why people were not adhering to medication , among them is that people wait to travel in groupings due to fear of animals especially those from Liuwa crossing the park area and stocks out of medicines and inadequate ART facilities,” the report read in part.

It further stated that currently stocks of medicines had improved and a system would be put in place to monitor adherence.

Mobile ART was however recommended to be a remedial measure to the problem.

According to the District AIDS Task Force Kalabo district stands at 13 percent HIV/AIDS prevalence rate, with the poverty level at 85 percent.
