THE Zambia Professional Boxing and Wrestling Control Board (ZPBWCB) has granted a boxing licence to multi-division light welterweight female champion Esther Phiri.
ZPBWCB secretary Simon Mwale announced the development in a statement released in Lusaka yesterday.

Mwale said the granting of the boxing licence to the Women International Boxing Association (WIBA) light welterweight female champion follows the successful medical tests conducted by the doctors and verified by board chairman Nelson Sapi.
“The Zambia Professional Boxing and Wrestling Control Board is pleased to announce the granting of a boxing licence to multi-division light welterweight champion Esther Phiri with immediate effect.
“This follows successful medical tests conducted by the doctors and verified by the chairman of the board’s medical sub-committee general Dr Abynoty Mulela on April 9, 2014,” Mwale said.
He said Sapi is happy that Esther’s return will elevate Zambia’s female boxing status to a new level considering that another icon Catherine Phiri of Oriental Quarries Boxing Promotions, a three time champion, is at her peak.
Esther retired from boxing in 2012 on medical grounds.
And Mwale said heavyweight boxer Joseph Chingangu also passed his medical tests in readiness for the upcoming International Boxing Federation fight against Francis ‘Galagata’ Zulu in Ethiopia.
