Two months after Malaysian Airlines Flight 370 went missing, CNN finally ran out of ways to create headlines about the disaster on their homepage—so they’ve started taking polls.

According to the newest one released on Tuesday, nine percent of Americans think the flight was abducted by space aliens or that beings from another dimension were involved. (Apparently nearly 10 percent of Americans have never heard of Occam’s razor.) The poll surveyed over 1,000 Americans and has a margin of error of 3.5%, meaning that in reality somewhere between 6.5% and 12.5% of Americans believe the alien theory, according to CNN.

Which is way, way too many. But airline tragedies usually have this kind of staying power in the news because we all imagine ourselves in the horror of the ordeal, knowing the plane is going down as it circles inexorably toward a black watery end for hours. Getting abducted by aliens sounds pretty nice by comparison. Maybe it’s just wishful thinking.

According to CNN nearly 80% think there are no survivors. 57% suspect terrorists of some sort, 42% suspect hijackers.  Just over half think the public will eventually learn what happened, and just 26% think the Malaysian government did a good job.

No word on what percent found CNN’s relentless coverage and willingness to report every log in the ocean as plane debris to be a touch overbearing.

  1. The average American will believe you if you him/her that Lusaka is in South Sudan and you have two elephants for pets.
