Sata, HH, VJ mourn Liwewe

President Michael Sata has expressed deep sadness by the death of legendary football commentator and administrator Dennis Liwewe, who died in Lusaka today.

In his message of condolences to the Liwewe family, President Sata says the late Mr. Liwewe was an icon who revolutionized Zambian football through his commentaries and many administrative roles he played.

In statement released to Qfm by his special aid for press and public relations George Chellah, President Sata notes that Mr. Liwewe was also a reservoir of knowledge in football and leaves a legacy of great patriotism and passion for sport.

The President adds that Mr. Liwewe was a further vibrant journalist who discharged his duties professionally.

He says it is his strong belief that upcoming leaders in sports can tap some wisdom from the life of this great son of Zambia saying Mr. Liwewe’s passing is a great loss not only to the Liwewe family but to Zambia and Africa as a whole.

And opposition United Party for national development (UPND) President Hakainde Hichilema has described the death of Mr. Liwewe as yet another dark day for Zambia.

In statement released to Qfm news this afternoon, Mr. Hichilema has also admitted that it would be a lie to not acknowledge that, in the 70%u2019s up to the late 90%u2019s, a football match was incomplete without the voice of Mr. Liwewe.

Mr. Hichilema says Mr. Liwewe’s descriptions of football matches were so captivating that you would literally be seeing the match even if it was on radio.

The UPND leader has suggested that as way of honoring the late Liwewe that one of the national soccer establishments is named after him.

Meanwhile Retired veteran politician Vernon Mwaanga says the late Dennis Liwewe who died this morning at Lusaka Levy Mwanawasa General Hospital will leave an impossible vacuum to be filled by anyone in Zambian and African football.

Mr. Mwaanga has told Qfm news that this is because the late Liwewe was a legendary football commentator who brought football into homes of many and made it feel like they were actually watching the match.
